One of the first things that comes to our mind when we hear the word "Colombia" is Salsa dancing. However, little do we know about the great electronic artists arising from it. One of them, without a doubt is Mono Henao. Mono was born and raised in Cali, Colombia and spent most of his weekends when growing up in a Salsa club named "Chango." Since that early stage, Mono Henao identified music with dancing, period. This is what Mono transmits to his crowd when behind the decks.
Electronic Music can take you to different places. There are DJ's who are musically astounding, but don't necessarily make you dance. The music that will make your feet move automatically, that is the music Mono uses in his sets. Living in Miami, the melting pot of the Americas since 1998, one of Mono's great qualities is the ability to cater to different audiences, depending on the venue and atmosphere. Mono is also known for playing long sets, starting out with sweet warm up sounds of ambient and chill out, then slowly transitioning the audience to deep house grooves. Then, following by more tech-house beats that keeps on growing throwing and make any crowd jump enthusiastically, ending his set in the finest techno tunes. "I like to be diverse in the music I play, one must be lead by the crowd and how they react, as long as the music is picked in a fine way and everything is combined harmoniously. The key is that each record is picked perfectly!" Being that Mono is A&R for "Deeper Substance Records" as well as "Electronic Groove" (www.electronicgroove.com) his job is finding tunes that perfectly fit in to his sets, the record label, and world wide "Electronic Groove" listeners.
Mono Henao has been behind the decks in every major club in Miami and biggest clubs in New York . His diversity goes from playing at super clubs like Miami's Space to top fashion designer shows, picking perfect tunes that make models march to the beats. Playing alongside partner Chris (the notorious Chris and Mono duo), in 2002 they shook Miami with their famous Friday night residence at Lola, a club co-owned by John Digweed and big-time Miami promoter Carmel Ophir. Spinning with DJs like Omid 16b, Demi, Desyn Masiello, Leon Roberts,Johnatan Lisle, Paolo Mojo, Jay Tripwire, Lee Burridge and The Fuse, Chris and Mono's career kept on growing. They played at Miami's hottest parties, "Cavally" Runways and the "Dulce de Leche" swimwear fashion show, as well some others that will be hard to forget ....The Playboy Party at the Versace Mansion, opening for DJ Trendroid, the first block party in Miami produced by Aquabooty, playing alongside legends DJ Harvey, Q Burns and Miguel Migs and a while slew of other memorable events.
Mono's turning point came when his good friend Desyn Masiello needed to excuse himself from the booth at Miami's Club Space’s infamous Terrace and asked Mono to take over the decks for a few minutes. Nowadays, Mono enjoys “the art of warm up" and has a great ability to do this. He opened for Danny Howells, Omid 16B, Leon Roberts, Paolo Mojo, Rowan Blades, Parks & Wilson and Qburns, to name a few and was even requested by D:FUSE to be the one who faithfully opens for him when playing in Miami. Mono also opens for his good friend Demi at his regular "LOVED UP" residency in New York City. Last year, Mono moved to the Big Apple and is currently featured with local and international DJs at his new home. Mono recently DJ’ed at Rebel with New York based Low End Specialists, Dana Berqguist as well as Andy Newland. Mono also makes guest appearances for 'The Vault" in their monthly CITRIC parties.
Mono Henao recently joined the gang at Halcyon Records in Brooklyn, according to Mr. C, "perhaps the best record store in America." Mono spends his time as one of the driving forces of the www.electronicgroove.com Podcast, Halcyon the store and focuses on his gigs. Stay tuned for more from Mono Henao in the near future!
