10 YEARS of GLOW!!!!! from a few of the people who played a part...
Wow -- 10 years! Congrats Panorama!
I wish I could be there tomorrow, but due to poor timing on my part, I'm on the other side of the country! But here are some thoughts from a few of the people who played a part in Glow's success over the past 10 years.... and there's a few more I'll be posting tomorrow...........
Interview with Pete Moutso
1. What inspired the Glow concept? Why "Glow?"
Antonis and I were in our office one day and there was some DJ magazine with glowsitcks on it. I remember he saw it and thought “Let’s call it Glow and we can throw glowsticks when the djs go on and create a hype”. I think it worked ;-)
2. Did you ever think Glow would achieve the success that it did, and become DC's longest running EDM party?
Yes because we believed in it so much. Trust me, there were rough times (9/11, Sniper, Break Period between Insomnia and Fur, issues at Ibiza, economy) but we had to persuade ourselves that we could get through it. We always invested in the party (we bought and owned the light and sound system at Insomnia, we bought a lot of equipment at Zei Club, AND spend a lot of money on djs) and sometimes it was tough but we always thought long term and were very patient. For example, most club owners/promoters if they lost money a few weeks would just give up. They don’t have the patience to stick with it. We do ;-)
3. Was it ever a challenge to get some of the world's top DJ's to come play at Glow for the first time?
Yes. At the time Panorama was doing 3-5 BIG nights a week. No offense to anyone else, but we were doing over 10,000 people a week at our weekly parties (Spot, Earth, Spy)…we didn’t just do one night a week. We knew we were very strong as promoters and cutting edge in terms of both online and street marketing (this was 1998/1999). But I realized that we had to start from scratch when it came to Djs. Buzz was well established and created a well deserved reputation in DC. We were the new guys that had to prove themselves. Agents/Managers/Artists had no clue who we were. No one was calling me back and no one would work with me because they didn’t want to hurt their relationship with Buzz (I totally understand the business behind that!). At the time, Trance was getting huge and we loved it. So we focused on that sound. With the help of George Acosta (at the time doing bookings at Shadow Lounge in Miami) we were able to work together to get guys from Europe in Miami on Fridays and DC on Saturdays. Then Tiesto and his partner Arny Bink helped me with the Dutch guys…Ferry and Armin. Then for some reason…everyone was answering my calls ;-)
4. Out of 10 years of memories, can you tell us about one of your all-time favorite nights?
Best show we have ever done was the Tiesto Elements Of Life Outdoor Concert in September 2007. It was our first “big” show. We learned a lot! Permitting, zoning, EMS, DCPD, production and real marketing. We lost money, but we were very proud of what we had accomplished. “Little” DC promoters were able to bring over 8000 people to the middle of nowhere in DC with out any problems! Not one single refund was asked for! Tiesto told me at the time that it was the best production he had in the US and that it was his biggest show on the East Coast!
5. What makes Glow so different than all the other weekly parties in the area?
Simple. You pay $20 to go to any club to hear a $300 dj. You pay $20 to go to Glow to hear the guy who produced the music that every $300 dj plays!
6. You used to be a resident DJ for Glow. What made you give up that part of your role?
A lot of factors. I really miss it and it is my true passion. But, we were getting bigger and Antonis, Jimmy and I were spread out between Lima, Ultrabar and Glow. It was more important for me to be out of the dj booth and oversee the whole party. Back in the day, Antonis and Jimmy managed the party and I could focus on DJing. Now we have a lot more responsibilities to our venues. It was either be a DJ or a Promoter…I chose Promoter and I love it!
7. Do you feel that Glow's support and the support of Glow's community has helped any DJs advance in their career?
Yes, for sure. We were the first (or one of them) to bring Tiesto, Armin and Ferry to the US. I remember we had a year where Armin and Ferry were bi monthly residents. They would come to DC on a Saturday and not have any gigs on Thursday or Friday…crazy! I remember that on those nights we had people coming from NY, Boston, Toronto and Miami to see them because they weren’t playing anywhere else!
8. How does it make you feel to look back over 10 years of success and know what you have accomplished?
I know that I can look in the mirror and say to myself “I have contributed something special to DC”. I also feel very old!! 10 years of Glow and I think 15 years of Panorama!
9. Where do you see the future of Glow headed?
In what I do directly (Music path), we are building a new lounge called Bar Code. Not sure if it will be weekly (like 4Play Thursdays at Ultrabar) or monthly (like what I do at Lima with special guest djs ie. Armin, Dubfire, Sharam, Saeed etc.) Glow type event. We are working on one or two BIG shows for 2010. We will continue to improve the weekly Glow experience at Fur. I know that it had a bad reputation, but I can honestly tell you that since we have been back they have cooperated 110% and I feel have done a great job with patrons. However, if you thought the 2009 lineups were great…wait until you see what I have in 2010!!
But honestly, Antonis is the Promotions/Marketing “Social Media expert”. He is working on some cutting edge things that will build the Glow Community. I think that what he is working on will really take us to the next level in terms of promotion. Among other things, we are working on developing Glow Radio and getting the live sets online and producing a Glow TV weekly show (online). It will all be user friendly and interactive. You will notice all these things in the weeks to come on our site!
10. Other than musically, how do you feel Glow has changed over the past decade?
I think that the popularity of EDM is much bigger now then ever. Armin, Tiesto, Guetta have all become household names. I think that Oakenfold opened the door, Tiesto took it to the next level and David Guetta is going to cross it over. I think that instead of Glow appealing to a niche crowd, it now appeals to a more mainstream crowd because the music has become more mainstream.
11. If you could go back and do it all over, would you do anything different?
I don’t like shoulda coulda woulda ;-) Let’s just say I am happy where we are at

Interview with Dan Sampson
1. How did you come to be one of the resident djs at Glow?
I was djing at the now-closed Spank on Friday nights and Panorama took over promoting the night. Shortly after that, Pete sent me an IM one day asking me to play at Glow. Obviously I jumped at the chance...my first gig was opening for Tall Paul.
2. Which DJ have you opened for at Glow that you were the most excited about?
I am going to have to give you two. First, Roger Sanchez because he was one of the first big DJs I ever saw live and I loved his music. Second, Paul Van Dyk because, let's face it, he's a legend...and a proper gentleman, too.
3. In what ways have you seen Glow change over the years?
It has definitely grown musically. In our early years, Glow was very much focused on trance, but has since expanded to bring in house, progressive, techno, pretty much anything that is going to provide a good show. Its a testament to Pete's attention to musical tastes and trends.
In other ways, as the party has grown there has definitely been a dilution of the crowd in terms of those who are strict music heads. It's inevitable really, as more people are attracted to something it becomes less pure. Not that popularity is a bad thing of course, the more people that like electronic music the better, but it slightly dulls the edge the genre once had.
4. Do you feel like Glow had any influence over your career?
Absolutely. It made me infinitely more versatile. When I was the sole resident DJ, in a given month I would open for headliners as varied as Tiesto, Erick Morillo, Gabriel & Dresden and Danny Howells... all of whom have distinct styles and require a different tone from their opener. It was difficult sometimes, but I loved every minute of it.
5. What was the inspiration behind Solid Gold?
Me and Jeri were kicking around ideas and he played me a few vocals he had recorded and one of them fit. We put the drums together and that was it. I really like Solid Gold, but my favourite track we did was One More Dance. I was and am very proud of that tune.
6. You've been an active member of this community for a long time. Would you say that you have met and connected with pretty much everyone on the glow board, in one way or another?
No, not at all. I have met some of the folks from the DC area but almost none of the NY crowd. I also haven't gone to the WMC in years which seems to be where most of the Glow and GN community get together.
7. Will there ever be another Dan Sampson & Jhereal production?
I'm sure there will be. Jeri is very busy with other production work right now and has been for a number of years but we will do something one day.
8. Do you remember a little town called Wilkes-Barre?
Ha! Yes, I do. That has to have been one of my most notable gigs. You and Danny were great hosts
9. What has been the song most requested of you during your tenure at Glow?
I would preface this by saying that I created the monster, but its got to be Greece 2000. I make no apologies, though, it's a great tune.
10. How does it make you feel to look back over the years and see how far you have come?
Well, I would never be as pompous or solipsistic to say that I have come very far (particularly compared to many others in the same field) but I am very proud of what I have achieved. Glow has been a very big part of my life for the last six years and, whilst it's not clear how much longer they will have me around, I will always be thankful to Pete, Jimmy, Antonis, Sam, Roberto, Matt and everyone else in the Glow family.
11. What would you like to say to the fans who have supported you over the years?
Again, it would be narcissistic of me to lend any support to the notion that I have "fans", but I say without contrition that I owe any and all success I have had to the people who have supported me; I am and always will be eternally grateful to anyone who came to any of my shows. I only ever wanted to play good music to good people, and I believe that at least the second part of that goal has been achieved.
On a personal note, my preference has always been that I am thought of as being a good person over being a good DJ, but there have been several instances over the years where people have appeared to take a dislike to me for reasons unapparent. I can say that in almost every circumstance these people were DJs too and it's been something I have never understood. I have always been of a mindset that we each do our own thing and have never concerned myself with the business of others...sadly, the same cannot be said of everyone I have encountered. These people often had a colossal blindspot in which who they actually were was obscured by who they thought they were and, to the detriment of their own sense of self-importance, their treatment of me revealed both.

Interview with Edgar V
1. Which DJ most inspired you over the years?
I listen to many different dj's but if i had to narrow it down to 3 it would be Paul Van Dyk, Luciano, and Carl Cox
2. How do you feel Glow compared to all the clubs you were spinning at in Florida?
It was my home away from home.....The vibe I got from glow's crowd was the same vibe i felt back home at Space (which was my residency at that time).
3. Do you feel like Trancemission had an affect on your career?
I would believe so but I think it was mainly my residency at Space.
4. What were the feeling the first time you opened for Paul Van Dyk?
I was really nervous cause I knew this was a very important gig and everything had to be perfect.
5. You've mixed up your choice of musical styles plenty of times -over the years. What genre of music is your top choice at the moment?
I'm playing house.,
6. You've played at several of Panorama's venues over the years. Which was your favorite?
Insomnia was my favorite
7. When you get booked in DC, is there anything else you enjoy doing here?
Well since i've gone up to DC so much i've had the chance to do everything up there from museums to amusement parks to great dining.
8. How did you get to where you are today in the industry?
I was really lucky to be at the right place at the right time......my real major boost though was my residency at Space.
Edgar also wanted me to include this special mix:

Interview with Blake Jarrell
1. How did you get discovered by Armin, and what was it like to go on tour the dj voted #1 in the world?
After I moved to Chicago I was working for a local dance music promotion group passing out flyers. Armin was playing one night at Crobar where I was flyering. I gave him a CD of my productions and we've been friends ever since. Touring with him has of course been really amazing...his fans are great and I've had the chance to make some of them my fans too. We've been all over the globe together, played some great gigs and clubs, and have some hilarious touring stories. Armin's definitely been my greatest mentor inside and out of the DJ booth.
2. What influenced your desire to become a dj/producer?
I've just always been in love with listening to and making music. Everyone has their creative outlets, mine is definitely music. Music, especially electronic dance music, also presents its challenges...things are constantly evolving, new ideas come about, and trends ebb and flow. That challenge in creating music really excites me. What's even more exciting is getting to play it for other people and include your own music in a storyline over the course of a night at the club.
3. How would you describe the crowd at Glow?
Playing for Glow has always been great. Pete and his Glow team have done a great job at keeping great, fresh talent constantly coming through DC to educate the dance music fans. Every DJ's wish is to play for a crowd that "gets it" and trusts the DJ. Glow definitely has that crowd and that vibe.
4. What is your next goal in your music career?
I'm working on so many things at once right now...finishing up some new original stuff, some collaborations, remixes, turning my radioshow into a podcast, planning the next Concentrate 2010 album...I guess my biggest goal is to try and prioritize all of that!
5. What is the most exciting event you have had an opportunity to perform at?
Hmm...I'll tell you the most frightening one. It was one of my first tours ever with Armin. We played in Dubai at this huge venue inside the stock exchange. None other than FAITHLESS was playing live, totally rocking the crowd of over 7000 people, and they encored with "Insomnia". I had to go on after these guys finished totally tearing the roof off of the place. I thought the crowd was going to eat me alive. Everything turned out OK though, and I'm still alive! As far as exciting goes, all the gigs are pretty exciting. I've been fortunate enough to play in some really cool, unique, and exotic locations like Boracay, Marrakech, a cruise ship in the Baltic Sea, beach festivals in Israel, the deserts of Tunisia, and even a Six Flags in Mexico City! Locations like that always add a little something extra to the experience.
6. Do the memories of Hurricane Katrina still haunt you from time to time?
Not really. I miss being away from my family, and that's always hard for everyone, but other than that its something I've moved past. New Orleans was a really unique place to grow up in and I think that enviornment definitely had an impact on my personality today, but it wasn't a place I wanted to grow my music career in. I kind of always wanted to get out of the south and explore. I always say that Hurricane Katrina was the worst and best thing that ever happened to me because if it wouldn't have happened, I wouldn't have been forced to move to Chicago and I probably wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today.
7. What was the inspiration behind Boracay?
I had an absolutely awesome gig on a tiny island in the Phillipines called Boracay. Usually for gigs I don't really get to stick around and take in the place I'm visiting, but for that gig, I was there for about a week. I got to see everything, meet the people, enjoy the culture and food, and make lots of new friends. The gig was at night on the beach and I played for about 6 or 7 hours until well after the sun came up. It was a really magical experience in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
8. Is there one place int he world you haven't spun yet, but would really like to?
Australia. It's really the only place I haven't played yet. I'd really like to go there especially in December or January where it's summer there so I can escape the painful Chicago winter for a minute!
9. When will you be back at Glow, and is there anything we should look forward to?
I'll have lots of new records and remixes to test on you all. Bring those open minds and ears that you always bring, and I'll bring the best music I can find to play for you.

..........several more coming! stayed tuned!!

It was such an amazing night, so many beautiful people, so much amazing music. I was handed glow sticks by the handfuls and managed to give them all away. I won't forget that night for a long time. It was a blasphemy that the place wasn't packed like DJ Tiesto foam party with $100 bills given to the first 1000 people that show up.
It was the first night in like 5 months that I showed up to that club and nobody asked me where the rolls are, which felt great, to be able to dance like a bio-luminescent idiot without getting pulled aside about drugs, it is such great times. I don't even want to think about how much Jager I drank. I don't have anything against rolling but I hate being asked about pills when I am not on them and don't know where to find them, only to have people not believe me when I tell them I cannot help them.
I guess I will go ahead and say it, I love you guys, I didn't want that night to end, those tracks brought so many memories back, it took all my self control to keep from coming in my pants and crying, that is probably saying too much I'm sorreh.
While I am saying too much, blonde girl in the pink bottoms that dances in the hoisted cage thing wearing barely anything, I'd kill for a chance to touch you, and I'm not talking crossbow to the back of somebody's neck style murder, I mean like Dexter style tie somebody up to a table and chainsaw them, if that is what it takes I'd totally do it.
I will probably not show up next week, I will be there for Armin, and I will be there for Halloween, Halloween costume is gonna be amazing I am scared to wear it in public tho.
I was the glowing dude in the bright green t-shirt with the glowing green bunny ears BTW. I've been having a lot of fun with the bunny ears lately.

Yeah, I'm so mad at myself for planning my vacation on that weekend!! SO MAD!! I talked to Roberto today and when he told me all the tracks he played i was soooooooo sad that I wasn't there. I hope everyone that possibly could, came out and had a blast.
Glow has been such a huge part of my life over the past few years... I wasn't there for all 10, but for 8 years Glow has given me so many amazing friends, memories, opportunities, and music... and me and sky make no secret of the fact that we found Glow at a time in our lives where we were really depressed, and finding this family away from home was something that truly changed our lives in many ways. that 4-hour drive every week was nothing..... it was worth all the times we slept on the side of the road. it was worth driving in rainstorms and blizzards. it was worth spending our last $50 on gas to drive down and be part of something amazing. and it was worth leaving florida to come back and live close to it.
sky and I will be out in full force next week for casey! I havent seen my sister on the dancefloor in a long time and I am so excited I can't even stand it!
Thanks again Pete, Antonis, Jimmy, Roberto, Dan, and all the Panorama people who came and went over the years... you should be proud of how far Glow has come!!

I agree 100% both on principal and the fact that Glow is among the best weekly parties ever to rock the continent. The economy doesn't matter when your the most committed and your the best. In the past year my business has skyrocketed and having very few moments to relax has kept me away from Glow alot but I will certainly be very proud to support Glow and all the awesome talent you have brought and will bring for the next 10 years. Thank you, Pete, Antonis & Panorama Productions!!! At this point I would like to post something for all of the Glow forum as a thank you...

in wilkes-barre? no... the same group of people who have been trying to throw parties for the past 10+ years have pretty much given up. I think once a blue moon some of them still try to throw an event at Bar... but i hear that's pretty much failed over time too.
Are you Shamandjs Randy under a new s/n?

An Interview with DJ Skytrancegirl
An Interview with Skytrancegirl
1. What was so great about the first time you came to Glow, that prompted you to come back week after week?
Well before i knew about GLOW i was a "philly raver" and spent every weekend from 1998-2000 at club Space aka Motion. They closed down in 2000, and ever since then i was on a mission to find a club that felt like home like Space did. I went to many diff
parties, many diff clubs and none of them felt just right. I always had a motto "the DJ brings the music, but the people make the
party, and thats what i look for in a club. I can see my fave dj in the whole world and if the vibe isnt right its not as good.
well one day i seen an advertisement for PVD in dec 2002 at this place called insomnia/GLOW in DC and i said lets give it a
try.It ended up being one of the best clubbing decisions i ever made. I immediatley fell in love with the warehousey vibe the
place had, and on the 1st nite there already made some awesome friends that in due time would become very dear to me, and to this day hold a special place in my heart. When i came back from PVD i felt complete, i knew i found a new club, GLOW that i can call home.
2. Are there any DJs you had the opportunity to see for the very first time at Glow?
Yes. Ferry Corsten, Johan Gielen, Marco V, Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, and many others.
3. Did you ever think you would have the opportunity to play at your favorite club?
No, not at all. When Gerald called me to ask if i wanted to spin at GLOW at 1st I thought it was some kind of joke. Then i was dumbfounded, I couldnt believe what just happend. Then finally I
ran to my roomy Danny and told him and started jumping up and down, i was so excited!
4. What was that night like?
def one of the best, proudest nights of my life. Being able to spin
at my fave club in the whole world i was nervous as hell but i had a blast and its something ill never forget.
5. Have you kept in touch with any of the people you have met at Glow over the years?
Yes. Not as often as i would like to, but they will always have a very special place in my heart.
6. What is the symbolism of the tattoo on your back?
some people ask why would you get the symbol
of a club tattooed on your back? they dont understand, its not just a symbol. That tattoo is the
only tattoo i have ever gotten on my body cause i never felt so strongly about a time in my life.
This tattoo symbolizes all the great years Amy and I have had at glow, it makes me think of way in
the beggining when we 1st started going and we started hanging around with Frank (Faisal), Shayan,
AK, Mustafa, Mani, and all of us being at the club together and "as the rush comes" was always
our group song. Then all the crazy after parties at Franks house. There was a certain chemistry
between all of us when we hung out together, those were some of the best times of my life. The
tattoo reminds me of all the other wonderful friends ive made and all the amazing times ive had because of GLOW.
7. What makes Glow so special -- isn't it just another club?
No. Its not just another club, its
the people and the vibe that makes it the wonderful place it is. Its like a family...the GLOW
family. Been going there for 7 years and i dont plan on stopping anytime soon, although life changes
and i may not be able to make it down as much as i used to, i will never stop coming, I will always
be there as often as i can.
8. What do you miss most about Insomnia?
I miss the warehouse/party type feel it had to it
and i also liked how the dj booth was level with the crowd. I think its a much more personal
experience that way.
9. Do you think Glow has changed over the years?
Yes. when i 1st started coming to glow it was
a trance party. they have become very versatile over the years and book many different genres. I
feel that they made a smart choice and needed to evolve as they have to maintain their #1 status
in the club scene.
10. What would you like to say to Panorama Productions?
Def a big Thank You for restoring my
faith in the club scene, thank you for all the wonderful memories over the years, without you
none of that would have been possible. Also much thanks for keeping it real throughout
the years, you have changed through the years to keep it going but at the same time stay true to
what its all about and thats something to be proud of! Another thing that makes panorama special
is that they treat their loyal patrons with respect, and that means alot to me, thank you for all
you have ever done for me.

Is there any regular parties goin on there now? | |
ACTUALLY.....yes! there's 2 drum n bass parties per month and also a house/electro trance twice per month at Old Time Charlies.
Mark and I always go to the house/electro party and mark usually spins, real good vibes and real good times....actually a Halloween party going on this Saturday....next time you are in the area get in touch with me and we will take you to the places. coco lounge isn't there anymore but other places still throw local parties that are pretty good.
as Amy said, we don't have huge mega-clubs or huge parties nearby, but we do have a lot of great dj's and its good vibes, good fun and dancing.....and that's what matters!
