| Austin Leeds - Life in the "Discoteka"
DJ/Producer Austin Leeds stepped out of the studio just long enough to answer a few questions for us. Be sure to check him out this Friday [03.03.06] at the Groovanauts party at Sullivan Room!
1. When did you start DJing?
I started in 1997 ... I played guitar all through school so was always involved in music. I started producing before Djing.
2. Best part about your job.
To be able to travel the world and perform.. Best rush is to see people dancing to your music
3. Worst part about your job.
The Flights can be tough sometimes... A Flight straight from a night in theclub with my music blazing loud all night is not very fun
4. Who are some of your favorite DJ's/Producers?
I love Solid Groove/ Switch right now.. just so fresh and crazy unique production. MTV and Mark Knight as well are doing some amazing things. Real Influential. Soul Mekanik I always love...
5. Your recent productions/collabaration are, in my opinion, amazing, but a bit of a depature from your earlier style? Is this a deliberate
change, or just an evolution of your sound?
It is a total evolution. Naturally i wanted to make more party music. The older stuff was very deep and dark sounding, but I think always had a twist on it.. was never like your average house record... always left of center . Living and playing more in Miami has been a huge influence in just the party vibe.. Has to make people move and have energy . Even now ... Doing more party tunes.. but still have an evil twist to them
6. Ableton, Final Scratch/Serato, "laptop DJing".... What's your take on this new invasion of technology?
I am looking into serato now.. I get sent so much music on mp3 .. and the music i make myself.. i spend whole days burning cds and label things.. Ableton i love to use in studio but performance wise i like the feel on of the cd players.. but Serato hard drive thing is dope.
7. Because of this, more and more people are starting to DJ. Is this a good thing, or simply another example of overcrowding the profession
I think it is great ... with My space everyone seems to be a dj! But it increases the love and the interest in the music . So many new and young people are getting into things.. You don't have to be 21 and have a lot of money to go out and get into a club to be into house music .
8. Is there a lot of bitterness/jealousy/feuding between DJ's? Have you ever encountered any?
As Humans we all have that emotion so of course it is there. Especially when you are dealing with creative people in a business situation you are going to get feuds. I think at an international jet set thing Big Dj's just do their thing and are happy and know they are blessed to be able to travel and make a great living DJing. In the local scenes there are more feuds.. where promoters and Dj's are always changing clubs and nights. The only feuding I ever have is
creative stress.. arguing over points of the track and where thiings should be at. Sometimes when doing long studio sessions you get a little stir crazy .....
9. Trance is dead, house is house and electro and minimal are all the rage. Yes, no, it's all just EDM?
I think so yes.. Trance is still huge ! look at the top 5 Dj's in the world... i think a good tune is a good tune.. whatever it is.. On the dance floor things have to have a groove.. whether the groove is done with percussion, electro stabs, or house chords... as long as it has character and gets the people moving
10. There's a lot of bashing of DJ's/Musical Styles going on - my favorite DJ is better than your favorite DJ, your DJ plays shitty music,
mine is pushing things further... Why do you think people are so protective of their favorite DJ/ Producer?
People like what they like... You know the old saying of opinions everyone has one......Music is life to many people.. Including myself! So people feel passionately about who they like..
11. Craziest moment behind the decks?
In Argentina some guy lifted me up on his shoulders!! at the end of my set .. was 8 am and the place was still packed... Sobremonte, Mar Del Plata, Argentina..
"I'm sorry for your loss... Your mother was a terribly attractive woman"
If I told you things I did before
told you how I used to be
would you go along with someone like me?
If you knew my story word for word
had all of my history
would you go along with someone like me?
