Thumbs up Paul van Dyk @ Roxy, NYC (2005-11-11)

One of the best sets I’ve heard from PvD in the States and quite possibly Set of the Year. Easily on par with his WMC Space sets (last WMC’s was a Mulligan though). PvD took over for Bonham, who threw down in his own right, and cranked it to Eleven from the get go. There was no easing into it. There was no fluff. Just instant, hard, dark relentless trance and techno from beginning to end. I suppose one can say that Paul spun a “Berlin” set versus the usual stuff he spins in the US. He was spinning tracks he personally liked, not ones he had to in order to sell records or indoctrinate newbies into EDM with something more accessible. No repeating “Nothing But You” every other hour so that we’d all be extorted into buying his album just to get him to stop. In fact, PvD was so animated and into finally playing nothing but his own personal taste in music, I’d have thought he might have finally broken down and ate a bunch of pills. Hell, I was practically expecting him to bust out a set of glow sticks and offer to give me a backrub in between tracks.

While I heard many people could not get into Roxy by the middle of the night, for those of us that got there early enough, it helped make the party as great as it was. There’s no fun in being crammed like sardines into a venue filed to about 3 times it’s legal capacity. Doesn’t matter how good the music is. Unlike at PvD’s previous NYC gig at Crobar, there was ample room for everyone to move around freely and dance like there’s no tomorrow…Well, I guess technically, that’s kinda literal as far as Roxy goes. Word is that this NYC institution has been sold and is going to be demolished soon. That place has been around so long that our parents probably spilled their cocaine all over that dancefloor and got their spunk all over the bathroom stalls.

I’m not sure whether Paul was aware of Roxy’s fate, but he certainly spun as if he was. It was a proper sendoff. No holds barred. While he spun many of his favorite tracks spanning the entirety of his career, much of his selection was new or relatively unheard (around here). PvD didn’t drop anything that he had beaten into a pulp by now, aside from a track or two like “Crush.” Truth be told, surprisingly enough, I’m STILL not sick of that track. Then again, I might be biased cause I know Second Sun personally and had them perform at one of my parties a while back. Had Paul shared a few pints with me and spun in my living room, maybe I wouldn’t hate it so much if he did drop “Nothing But You.” Good for him that he didn’t though. I had been promising to everyone for years that if I heard him spin that ONE more time, I was gonna bum rush the booth, toss his PowerBook to the floor and do the Polka dance on top of it. This time, I was actually in good range to follow through. We took over the spot to the left of the booth, behind the projection screens. So I was sitting on the stage on the same level as the open booth. I could have easily made it before security would beat me down. At the very least, I could have reached over to PvD and poked him with a stick if I heard that intro or maybe taunted him. Instead, I spent the entire night jumping around like a giddy school girl, grinning from ear to ear cause she just found out that Johnny McCool has a crush on her.

I think the fact that so many of us were so close to the booth that Paul could see just how much fun we were having definitely contributed to his set. Granted, I might just be giving us way too much credit, but PvD was routinely looking over at us, grinning and jumping around almost as much as we were. When a DJ is enjoying his job, it definitely reflects in his music. This wasn’t the robotic van Dyk emotionlessly cuing up some fluffy cheese track cause his market research people told him he had to appeal to an “American” audience. In fact, after seen him all over the world for the majority of his career, I had never seen him get into his set and the crowd that much. I guess he’ll miss Roxy as much as the rest of us.

Awesome night, and awesome set. It was great seeing people there too, even if I was wandering around on my own for most of the night. My only regret was taking off at four, instead of finishing out the night, but I was sober and getting way tired. Definitely the best night out I've had in a long, long time though

I couldn't have said it better myself RUben!

It was a fantastic night from start to finish. The entire set surpassed any of my expecations. It was amazing. The vibe was awesome, the lights were amazing, and all our friends there made it all the more special.

Definitely the best set I have heard from PvD in 2.5 years, if not THE best. Definitely the set of the year. Fantastic music from start to finish. I can't remember the last time I was at a party like that. I can't wait to see Yosra's pics.

So great to be with everyone at our little spot. I loved having a view of PvD just living it up, having fun, jumping around, smiling, dancing...he was more animated then I had ever seen. He was so into his set. There wasn't a moment of the set I was dissapointed by. He dropped a track off Sasha's involver! Just like ruben said - didn't spin to the normal expecation.

The night was honestly worth the $47.25. So great to see everyone out. Such an awesome night!

"To all of you who came down for my final arc party, I couldn't have asked for a greater way to end what has been the most amazing and unforgettable residency. That was EXACTLY the party I was hoping for ... the Wizard waving his orb from the speaker, the "Danny" girls on the other speaker,... But all I wanted to say was thankyou for being a MAJOR part of what has been an amazing couple of years for me - .... Anyway, I'll leave it at that, but again - thankyou SO MUCH to all of you, I'll miss seeing you every month but, as I've said many times, New York is my favourite city, so don't expect me to ever stay away too long - because I won't.
Much love. Danny xox"

DOM:
I would be willing to enlist, unlike you, point proven .I said it in 2001 and my stance hasn't changed, If somebody attacks American on our soil and gets on tv or net and says come get us you Yankee p*ssies. I would join the military in 2 seconds.

Al-Qaeda isnt a country moron. They are a global organizations of scumbags.

First of all bin ladon didn't take credit for attacks in 2001, he denied it until 2004. When was he elected president of Afghanistan?2000?If so hes had a great 11 run so far... Considering hes been rumored to be in Pakistan for years, he doesn't fit into either of my criteria's.

Dom's daily to do list:

1- Kiss his "wife" on his way out of his house
2- Blame everything on Obama
3- Give no credit to Obama, even when Bin Laden, al-Awlaki, and Gaddafi were taken care of
3- Dump all his work on his secretary
4- Twitter, facebook for 2 hours
5- Post on Yankee/Jets/Knicks blogs
6 - Read conservative blogs and watch Fox
7- Select items from said sources that he lift and pass on as his own
8- Get schooled on his ignorance everyday
9- Spray tan so he's ready to club 24/7/365 for the next epic party that he will attend

Best set I have ever heard from PVD, dark pounding crazy shit that even made Paul bust a move. A perfect night from going crazy at the Roxy to having good clean fun @ Bries house for afterhours .

Thumbs up

I am glad PVD is top of his game right now. You guys are making hard on me not to give pvd second chance. I gave Sasha second chance and look how much Sasha has influenced my sound since then. Maybe I'll come out of my PVD retirement next time he is in town. I am happy that you guys had a great time. I have not seen Ruben write such long positive review on party in very long time. Maybe except for Paloween.

Yeah ditto to what most of everyone else said. This was probably my favorite set from PvD ever. It made GirlieGirl quite happy. So much so, in fact, that I'm wondering when he'll be back, which never happens.

Some highlights:

Me: George, you should probably sit.
George: Yeah, I think I'm gonna do that. [fumbles over wall getting one leg caught]
Me: Now the other leg.
George: [tripping over water bottles, velvet rope stands and coats] What is all this shit?!
Me: I don't know, George.
George: [unable to move butt to speaker] I feel like an idiot. Why can't I sit?
Me: I don't know, George. Here, put your butt here [I motion towards the speakers]
George: Where's my thing?
Me: Your what?
George: The thing with Paul, the PICTURE!
Me: You're standing on it, George.
George: Oh. [lights lighter and bends to look.] Hey, are you wearing boots? [moves lighter 2 inches from my feet.]
Me: Yeah, they're fur and you're about to set them on fire!
George: [stands back up] Oh.

*Yosra's "Jorge Face"

I especially like when Crazy Mandy's idiot friend jumped on stage and BUMRUSHED Paul! LMFAO! The poor frail man jumped higher than Dan would have if he were attacked by a small girl. Then the bouncer, flustered because he fucked up his ONE job of the night, dragged her across the stage and threw her on top of five of us, which wasn't cool. I was pissed.

Me to Anthony: I love your shirt. I have it actually. In the same size and everything.

Really - techno too? Sublime - sounds very much like a "Berlin" set. The real question though - genuinely a change in style; or a one-off? I'm still not inclined to try to see Paul in the UK until I read consistent reports of sets sans fluff.

Was I there for that convo????

My favorite, and Jorge's as well, is when Dan asked me for my jacket because he was "chilly". Ahhhhhh, Dany was cold......

I told Jan, it's pretty pathetic when the least psycho of your friends is Mandy...go figure.

My review will come later, one of only 3 I may ever write.

Great night though!

I could have barfed watching him wear that jacket in the 100+ temps.

She's the only one out of that group that I can even stand, and she's gone. Figures. With her gone, the rest of them have no common sense at all! I didn't even say hi to Elena because of all the shit I found out she said, did and lied about last year. I also snapped and called Mandy a loonie toon to her face after her moron friend got tossed on my head. EVERY time she comes out, it's a new lie and 10% of the time, it's an assenine lie about me or Dan. She has a date with my shovel, she does.

As Dan and I said today, the main thing is that Paul is OK and he continued.

I don't blame you. I doubt PvD would suddenly stop tailoring sets to the location he's playing at. The man still has to sell records. I bet a major reason why this set was so much harder than most of his previous ones is because of his Central Park gig two years ago. Because of that monsoon, he played an atypically hard set in an attempt to keep everyone dancing in the torrential downpour. since everyone ate that right up, he must have realized that he had underestimated NYC fans' tastes all this time. He thought we liked to wave glow sticks around to fluffy cheese.

Since then, his sets have been much harder, although not as hard as the Roxy one. Maybe he decided to push the envelope and see how hard we like it. Considering the crowd's reaction, looks like he got his answer.

Would that be the hard polka dance I've heard so much about?

yes. it's a bit like the shranz dance.

Paul banged it the fuck out....relentless driving trance and techno all night. We were smart and all met up at the Brewery and got to Roxy early. Good thing too, because Jerry Bonham is a class opener...set the mood nicely with prog house and trance, including a banging remix of Underworld-Jumbo.

Most of the crew was there, many crews in fact and when Paul came on, we camped on the side of the stage and danced to the beats. The visuals were great, the sound crisp, the club was packed, and we were all just delighted by the music. Later on, we ended up behind the stage area watching pvd do his thing. We could see the laptops and ableton running. He was using it throughout the set, some tracks more than others. We could even watch the process as he queued music up and set it to play. I'm not sure how much mixing he had to do as a result, but it was flawless as was the programming throughout the night. Just no let up at all, he just pounded us. By 3am, we were shocked we still had 3 hours to go after hearing so much good music.

Beyond that, we just had a killer time together. No incidents, lots of hugging and dancing, laughs, pole positioning for a place to sit, pictures, and jumping around. No way i'm listing who was there; it would be easier to point out who wasn't there. We were yelling to paul and he was smiling at us, we were shuffling back and forth in front of the huge screens to dance up front and enjoy the stellar visuals and laser show. Paul was great to watch, jumping around, air piano, fist pumps, all smiles. Afterwards was almost as fun as the party...jumped in the Rubano-mobile and headed back to Bri's for a great afterparty complete with Howells 24:7, POD2, snuggling, dancing, and some insanely funny conversations.

Overall, a ridiculously good party and great night with friends....

some tracks:

pvd-crush
pvd-the other side
kuffdam and plant-summerdream
new order-blue monday
perasma-swing into harmony (dub mix)

the chemical brothers-asleep from today
pvd-for an angel (piano mix)

WOW!!! I don't know where to begin..... I agree with everything Ruben had to say, EXCEPT, his unwarranted, blasphemous attack on Nothing But You. I will never tire of hearing that song..... EVER!

I haven't had that much fun in a club in almost two years. Nights like this are why I fell in love with the scene in the first place. From our first stop at Chelsea Piers to the moment I passed out, everything about the night was perfect. Roxy is by far my favorite club in the city, if it really is closing, I will certainly miss it. Jerry Bonham played the perfect opening set... He had the crowd in a full lather at just the right time. A total professional, he kept everyone interested, but didn't try to steal any thunder.

As far as Paul, AMAZING. I'm sorry to offend anyone, but NO ONE else brings that much joy, happiness and awe to a city as jaded and snobby as New York. Roxy was packed, but there was ample room to walk around and we had a great spot right behind the booth. I've never seen PVD that animated and that into a set before. I think Ruben hit the nail right on the head, he was playing his favorite music and it was clearly evident. There was a good hour where he wasn't even playing songs - just creating stuff on Ableton. On top of it all the guy is a class act.... At one point he had his manager grab a bunch of waters and he proceded to hand it out to the people in front that hadn't moved in six hours. At the end he stopped and signed every autograph and talked to anyone who approached him.

I didn't recognize a lot of the tracks, he maybe played three of his own productions, which is rare, but a few that made my night:

Purple Haze - Adrenaline
Agnello & Ingrosso - Yeah
Felix da' Housecat - Watching Cars Go By - Sasha's Involver Mix
The Chemical Brothers - Asleep by Day - Zoo DJ's Remix -His second encore and my favorite EDM song of all time!

Great hanging with everyone, I hope we can do it again real soon. And yes, Mace forgot how to sit for awhile... Ann bum rushed the booth and scared the shit out of Paul... And Jorge and Lust-E looked absolutely precious in their matching Diesel shirts!

Whoa - for Dany to write a review within 48 hours, something must've been good about this night.

Fuck it - I'll throw a review out there as well.

Anyone will tell you, this whole week I was more excited than I have ever been for a club night and now I know why, as will anyone else who was there. I usually try to break down one of his sets before the show and say alright, he'll open with this, play like this, I want an hour of this, an hour of this and an hour of this. WOW, was I wrong. Anyone who has gone to PVD with me knows usually, I'll find you afterwards at 7am, just let me be, don't take offense, that's just how it is. I go off on my on and just wander. Not this time. We found a PERFECT spot to his left where we all had room to dance, mingle and sit...comfortably.

Usually by 4 or 5am, it seems like the rest of the night drags sometimes, whereever I am. This time, I couldn't believe how packed the dance floor was at that time and that there was only an hour left.

Great times this night, I haven't had this much fun since NYE at IKON and probably won't until 12/30 in Vegas. I know a lot of you would never even give him the time of day cause his name is synonomis with trance. To each his own. Seems like it's cool to bash the #1 DJ, but let me tell you, this guy brings it everytime. You can take your Richie Hawtin's, your Danny Howells, your Digweed, your Desyn's, your Tiesto's and whoever else you wanna hype up, ala flavor of the month. This guy fucking brings it. No minimal shit that puts you to sleep. No buildup. No maybe he's warming up the crowd. No waiting. From 12-6 this guy was on. RE-FUCKING-LENTLESS for 6 hours. He didn't lose anyone and as I said before, it was still mobbed at 5am.

I will say, I'm very biased towards PVD, but to hear both Ruben and Lust give an unbiased opinion really tells you what kind of night musically it was. Ususally they're the first to say, it was good, but, it wasn't the best.

Afterparty was great as well....thanks Bri. If you can FedEx my brain back to me, that'd be great.

Lust, Jorge, next time speak before wearing the same exact shirt.

......and Dan made it til the end - I had the over/under at 4.30am in which i lost a couple bucks to Jorge and Lust.

As far as tracks go, wasn't really able to spot much more than what was already said.
