Danny Howells at Rise Afterhours (Boston) 11.5.11 Review |
Each time Danny Howells has come to Boston in the past 10 years or so it's been a special night. Rise Afterhours has become his home in Boston since Avalon and Axis shut their doors a few years back.
This past Saturday was another one of those great clubbing nights out with friends.
I took the C and J Trailways bus down from Portsmouth with one of my roomates so I wouldn't have the hassle of dealing with my car for the night. I drive way too much as it is. I met up with everyone at Flash's Cocktails(next door to the club). After a few grateful deads to the dome I got into Rise around 1:30am and found Danny laying down some deep dopeness already to the dancefloor. Lots of familiar faces as well as lots of the youngins' that seem to be compromising the majority of Rise's patrons these days started packing the dancefloor. It was really nice having the music on both floors allowing people to escape the packed upstairs and still hear the tunes.
Danny kept it deep and interesting for the first couple of hours getting the crowd really packed and ready for it. At around 2:30 or so (in reality 3:30 due to daylight savings) the party REALLY started to get going with funky and techy bombs starting to be played. A Simon Garcia take on Marvin Gaye's "If This World Were Mine" really stood out for me. I wish I knew more of the tunes as I thought I was pretty on top of the music out there recently but I didn't really know anything that he was playing at all and loved it all. I hung out in the booth for quite a while to escape the dancefloor which was packed until about 5 or so. I wish the crowd would have lasted a bit longer like they did in May but it was still an amazing night!
Danny ended things around 6 ish after slowing it down to about 112 bpm and dropping awesome disco edits including one of Everlast - Goodbye and Grace Jones - Pull Up The Bumper! He also dropped Will Saul - Fast Lane (Fink Remix) from his Global Underground 24:7 cd from 2003.
Not a bad night at all for Danny Howells considering he "had one of the best nights he's ever had in North America" when he spun with Dj Three in Tampa the night before
SOME TRAINSPOTS:
Marvin Gaye - If This World Were Mine (Simon Garcia Dub)
Will Saul - Fast Lane (Fink Remix) < From Global Underground 24/7
Crimea X - Varvara
Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper
Everlast - Goodbye (Edit)
It was really good seeing Stvy and Jenn, Stasis, Nick, Swells, Mike Fisher, Cornergirl, Dres, Amanda, Mo, TK + Kim, Laura and Adam, Benny T, Mike and Jess, Whickey, Josh, Eddie, Nick, and everyone else I'm forgetting who was out on Saturday night!
If anyone else has any trainspots please enlighten us (me) LOL!

Great review! Gotta make it up to Rise some time soon. It's been a while! Bunch of us used to make the trek up for Danny whenever he came around. So many great parties in NYC these days that everyone around here is getting lazy and staying local.

music was great on saturday night but here's my only gripe w/ howells at RISE...
i'm a long time fan of danny's as well...going back to the axis/arc days. so we all know how danny takes his time building his sets during that initial hour or two. but at some point a few hours into the night...you need to just straight up kill it at RISE for an hour or two. he had those 20 or 30 minute pockets where he did just that...like when he hammered those chuggy bombs around 4am i think...but then he brought the energy back down & leveled out. the saturday night crowd at RISE..esp the regulars...were not feeling that direcetion. IMO, thats what lead to folks leaving a little early on saturday night.
"Rise in Boston is, for me, one of the most important clubs in North America right now. It is the complete opposite of all the glammed-up, bottle-service clubs that have spread like wildfire. The emphasis is on the music, the loyal customers who attend, the sound, etc etc. All the things that I feel are so important, yet are so sadly neglected in way too many places these days. It's always a pleasure to play at Rise - I know I'll be given the best platform to do what I do to the best of my ability, in one of the friendliest and most welcoming of environments."

The young regulars which were there in full force Saturday are into for the most part dubstep and aggressive electro so regardless of Danny hammering it (his way) or not it wouldn't have been enough for them imo. That's the difference with Rise these days and of old. That's why their campus parties are packed and the hipster type nights on Fridays or whenever are absolutely packed beyond belief......Half those young kids have no clue who Danny is just that it was going to be a "big night" out

Even Boston is succumbing to dubstep? Rise should ban anyone who listens to dubstep.

you're absolutely right about a lot of folks not knowing who Danny is.
but i'm talking specifically about the saturday night crowd that we draw. while there are folks like us that appreciate what danny is doing...we're in the minority unfortunately...most of the folks in there do not share that appreciation. IMO, musically speaking, Danny doesn't belong on a Saturday night but it makes sense for the club to do so for a variety of reasons. i had several groups of friends that left early bc the music wasn't speaking to them. i'm at the club every Saturday night & having Danny there is definitely a curveball to the folks that show up every weekend regardless of the booking b/c they know what Saturday night typically entails music wise.

Danny Howells was brought there to play whatever he felt like playing not the "typical Rise Saturday night music" so if people were expecting stuff like MindControl etc. then whatever
Also I can't blame Rise one bit for appealing to the young kids because that's who have been coming out consistently from what I have seen the last couple of years I have been going out to Rise. They are just super young and don't get the deeper kind of djs. Mike has done a great job with the bookings in general trying to appeal to the older heads as well as pack the club every week for other parties. They just created a new party called Wonderland which is doing really well so far before afterhours starts on Fridays

agreed.
and obviously danny is a special event so this doesn't happen very often...but there's a reason why we book certain djs on friday vs saturday. we've been pushing & developing a particular sound on saturdays for 6 or 7 years now so a night like this past weekend catches people off guard...which is actually a good thing, IMO, since it exposes you to something fresh to your ears.
i will say that we only had one request from the crowd this weekend...a girl was asking if danny had any david guetta type stuff. i love it.

if it gets kids to listen to electronic music, i'm completely fine w/ it.
if it gets kids to go out and spend money on electronic music, i'm fine w/ it.
a lot of those kids don't know any better...especially here in boston where the scene f'n blows for the most part. hopefully its a gateway genre...like trance was for me...and then as your ear matures...you experiment w/ new sounds.

I'll take Tiesto over dubstep any time! Maybe I'm just getting old and don't get the music the kids are into these days.

you are old, Ruben! that's why you don't like dubstep.
FYI, here's a really simple explanation behind why certain DJs play on certain nights:
RISE Fridays: Drop oriented, big epic bombs. Think dubstep, electro, etc.
RISE Sats: DJ sets build around patience, programming, progression.
The two generations of EDM fans currently coexisting have very different expectations in their EDM experience. The young kids out on Fridays want to pump their fists and jump up and down every 3-5 minutes. The Saturday crowd wants to find the groove and have it not let go for the next 3 hours. They're fine with waiting and "earning" their peaks.
Danny should be doing this very thing on a Saturday, but I agree Mike - he needs to get fucking angry at 3:30 am and start getting realllly serious. I think that if he did that, he'd finally find the crowd into the palm of his hand and the nights going longer.
And like Patrick said, he was coming off one one of the "best sets he's ever had in N. America" the previous night. It's hard to have two of those in a row.
Thanks to all who came out!

I feel like Danny's set in May was better but I really enjoyed this past Saturday. He went in a different direction for sure but the music was top notch. He played housier and funkier vs. the tech-house/weird techno that he got into a long zone of in May which I also like. Apparently Rise's crowd likes the techier Howells....
Hopefully he comes back soon
