Originally I hadn't really planned on going as the line up didn't really convince me 100%. So, I had wanted to go to see Cari Lekebusch here in Frankfurt instead. But then I got talked into it by the German TAs I go party with a lot over here. So, I borrowed a minivan from the office, picked up 6 TAs and got to Mayday at 10 pm. Here are the DJs I managed to see:

21:20 - 22:20 MARCO BAILEY
Got the last 20 minutes of him, realy good set, enhanced by live percussions directly from the DJ booth. Very good intro for the night.

22:20 - 22:40 LIVE ALEXANDER KOWALSKI
As expected, he put on a very solid set, albeit at 20 minutes it was kind of pointless. A coupe of his hits to rock the huge floor, and that was it.

22:40 - 23:40 TAKKYU ISHINO
Now this was another excellent starter for my night, he banged it out really nicely. Renato Cohen vs Deluxe - Pontape/Just kick (Carl Cox remix) was the first real highlight of the night. At the time I didn't know that was a Cox remix, I thoguht Ishino had mixed the two tracks on top of each other on the spot, which would have been really cool. Awesome nonetheless, kicking and really danceable.

After that we had out TA group meet-up, about 30 or so people, nice!

00:00 - 01:00 PAUL VAN DYK
He started with a decent track, making uns expect a kicking set. but then, Crush, Holding on to Nothing, time of our lives. Argh, really unecessary to play these tracks, especially for THAT crowd. Well, 25 minutes into the set he picked it up and playing some of the acid tracks again he had played at the last Vandit Night in Berlin. He must have heard my comment to the other guys that if he now played 'As the Rush Comes' I'd personally kill him, so he didn't. So the second 20 mins were pretty good, only towards the end it got a little weaker again. Overall, not up to the standard, definitely not good enough for a Mayday. I was mostly bored, really.

01:20 - 02:20 DAVE CLARKE
After PvD we took a little break to get drinks and recover from the intense heat on the main floor and retreated to the upper circles of the arena, where we had an amazing view of the crowd and the lasers form above. Clarke threw down a very bass-heavy set which after a short while drew me back to the dance floor. By now they had cranked up the volume and the bass was so intense, it made your intestines vibrate. Now the night was going my direction.

02:30 - 04:00 LEON SEGA
Now there was some real crap on the main floor, so I ventured to the second and third floors. The second proved to be incredibly boring, but the third one held a revelation. Leon Sega from Greece, totally unknown to me, delivered a techno set of stunning quality. Excellent, soulful tracks with superb mixing. I thought Liebing would have some difficulty to top that. How wrong I was.

04:00 - 05:00 CHRIS LIEBING
The ultimate killer of the night. All smiles, he wasted no time and started to kick our asses right away. The energy he finally instilled on the previously slightly lame crowd with his music and his antics drove everybody nuts. Unlike last year, where he lost some of the energy halfway into the set, this time it was relentless. No, it was even more than that. He managed to increase the energy, the insanity from track to track, throughout. Everytime I thoght ti couldn't get any more sick than this, it did. Straight to the end, the climax, which was his very own American Madness (Alex Bau remix) which had me die. Hadn't achieved such an intense natural high in a long time. I was so thrown away by the set, I kept texting to those TAs who had stayed home, texted Metro, texted even tiny-b, I just had to share this insanity. My comment to the group after the set: best Liebing ever. Don't know if listening to the set will trasport any of this, but judge for yourself.

05:00 - 06:00 MICHEL DE HEY
After Liebings madness we left the floor, destroyed but profoundly happy, to get some rest for our tortured legs. So I got only parts of e Hey's set, and that only from the stands. It sounded good and solid, it appeared he continued where Liebing had left, albeit to a much emptier floor and with a fraction of the energy. We debated whether or not to stay through the very end to catch the closing set of DJ Dero from 9-10 am, but given that we would ahve to endure Tomcraft (7-9 am) and Mark Spoon (German techno DJ, big in the 90ies, now horrible, from 8-9 am), we decided to check out Agoria and then leave after that.

06:00 - 07:00 AGORIA
I was curious to find out what this now very in demand French DJ and remixer had to offer. It was intelligent techno, I might say, though not as driving or energetic so as to send the crowd into a frenzy. Some pretty danceable stuff, some slower stuff. Decent, but not amazing.


So just after 7 am we left, surprisingly found no police checkpoints on the road (though I heard there were some earlier in the night), and all got home with no problems.


Summary: considering I was there "against my will" I had an amazing time. The overall energy of the event clearly lagged that of last year, but some awesome sets made up for that, as did the company. No regrets " />

Mayday 2004, Dortmund
