Interview: Ferry Corsten
by glittergirl: 12-21-2003

You spent your birthday this year in Asia. Did you receive any unique gifts from your fans?

Yes, I spent my birthday in Tokyo this year and they had a special party for me. It was in a karaoke bar in a private room with a lot of alcohol…

Do you feel that the passing of the RAVE act has affected your music career?

No, not really. I actually think that it has only made the cry for electronic dance music or rave music stronger. You see that more and more people are listening to that music and that the DJ as an artist is being respected even more…

What are some of your favorite clubs to spin at?

Glow - DC
Spundae - LA
Avalon - NYC
Space 34 - Miami
Godskitchen – UK
Velfarre - Tokyo

Was it a disappointment to you that you didn't get to play at Creamfields this year?

I was booked and on the line up, but my former booking agency made a big F*ck up with another booking on the same day. That's why I had to let go of Creamfields. I was very pissed off about that…

This summer you played for the first time at Space 34 in Miami. How would you describe your first impression of the Space crowd?

That was a very wild night. I think I played a 5 hour set and I left that place at around 8 in the morning. I loved every sec of it…

When you're not out playing for your fans or in the studio producing, how do you usually spend your time?

With my remote close to me, a good movie in my DVD player, and a big bag of chips…

Even though you're considered one of the top DJ's in the world, do you still get nervous before an event?

No, luckily I'm not a nervous person and I'm doing this to often to get nervous. However, when I did have my own concert for my album release here in Amsterdam for 5,000 people, I got quite nervous because those people where there only for me and to hear my spin for 9.5 hours.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I don't know. I take thing as they come. But I do see myself still working in the music scene.

Are you currently working on any new productions?

Well, I just released my album ‘Right Of Way' and that will have a couple of future singles on it. So, I'm taking it easy for a bit to get some new inspiration. I am creating some new plans already for my next album.

Has any particular DJ or producer influenced you the most?

Not really a DJ, but I think the music from the 80's have always been a big influence on me…

You've obviously played at a countless number of shows. Is there a particular event that is the most memorable to you?

Yes, That was my ‘Right Of Way' concert at the end of October this year. That was a 9.5 hour spectacle with the setup of a rock concert…

What is your favorite track that you've produced and what was your inspiration for it?

I think that is still my remix for William Orbit – Barber's Adagio For Strings. That original piece of classical music is just a piece of art and it was a dream of mine to work with something beautiful as that.

Is there anything particular about DC that you enjoy when you play here?

The DJ booth and the connection with the crowd. They are right there in front of you and they are loving it!

What would you consider your biggest accomplishment this year?

Finishing two artist albums…one for System F for Japan, and my very own Ferry Corsten – Right Of Way album. And depite of all the time in the studio, moving up in the DJ list from 9 to 6.

What is your New Year's resolution?

Put a smile on your face…

Besides music, what is the one thing you cannot live without?

Lia.
