I'm always skeptical about seeing djs at trendy places but the thought of seeing
S&P last night in an open air club was just too much to resist. It was a beautiful
night in DC. Perfect weather for an outdoor party. Kken and I arrived shortly
after 11 to a line that stretched through the courtyard. Air is located just outside
the Ronald Reagan Federal Building in DC. Pretty weird, huh? Anyhow, shortly after
getting in line, Mike Haddad, his girlfriend, Vicman & a friend joined us.
The line moved pretty quickly. So far so good. There was no pat down but we were
all individually wanded. My security guard was creepy as he wanded over my boobs,
he leered and said "Niiiiiiice" Ugh! $20 cover later we were inside
(outside?). Palash was already on the decks banging out the funky beats. Ran into
Royce Haven & the lovely bebegringa. I only saw one bar which was packed at
all times. They have a hardwood dance floored laid down on part of the concrete
in front of the dj booth. To the right of the dj booth is the vip area which you
can buy into by purchasing a ridiculously expensive bottle of liquor. Also, if
you have to go to the bathroom, you have to go inside the RR building and through
TWO security check points!
Everyone seemed to be enjoying the music. Saeed took the decks shortly after.
I'm more of a Saeed fan so I was very excited. I haven't seen them since WMC.
About an hour & 15 minutes after we arrived while Saeed was deep into his
set, the music suddenly stopped. We thought maybe he was having technical difficulties
but I noticed he seemed upset. All of a sudden there's a different dj up there
(the resident dj???) and he drops 50cent's In Da Club! UGH! The crowd rushed
the stage! What's wrong with you people? S&P just got yanked from the decks!
Obviously most of the crowd was not there to see S&P, they wanted hip hop.
Typical DC crowd. We weren't quite sure what had happened but soon it became
quite clear that S&P were not going to go back on. I just paid $20 to hear
them for an hour & 15 minutes! We walked out and we saw Palash on his phone.
He was throwing his hands up in the air and was yelling into the phone. I don't
understand club managers in DC sometimes. I guess I just think of S&P as
local scene heroes but word hasn't quite reached the masses. Anyhow, it was
very disappointing. The night was salvaged in part by going to see Mike &
Osta spin at Ben & Mo's. Thanks guys!
