OK, I went to the Roxy with an open mind last night well aware of the 'Juiced
Up Roxyheads' reputation. Of course, there was some of 'them' but my experience
made me very excited for the immediate future of NYC clubbing...
I arrived at 1 after waiting in line for 10 minutes or so. There were two points
of security check including a metal detector, but there was no problem getting
things in. Just be polite and you can walk right through.
Having never been there before, I understood that the Roxy is a converted Roller
Rink still with the wood floor in tact. This made for a large main room. I talked
to a few people and they said they made the floor bigger. IMHO, its the best
main room of the larger clubs. Props to the visual and laser/light guys as they
were on point all night.
Onto the music...Noel Sanger was the perfect opening DJ. Progressive house/trance
was his theme picking it up around 1:30 or so. He had everyone gearing up for
Tiesto as chants started for him around 2:15. A great set up...At 3 Tiesto came
on and the place blew up. I'm not trainspotter but he played Shed my Skin, Summer
calling Airwave Mix, 643, Lethal, Nebuchan, We Came, Taub 2002, Datax, Umeck
(my CP buddy helped me out there). Some cheese. Tiesto was bangin', much better
than his December '01 Exit set. He never stopped moving the the booth smiling,
signing vinyl covers, etc. I left at 6, but I guess he continued onto 7 or so
with a 25 min encore.
Oh yeah there is this system called THE PHAZON that was perfect. Have your
heard of it? (j/k) Great bass/treble balance...made props to the sound guys
there. So happy to hear close to perfectly tuned PHAZON I've heard since...gulp...Twilo.
The people were allot nicer than I expected. There was a perfect mix of clubber/ravers/b+t'ers
young and old. Tons of space to dance or chill and I never had to wait more
than a few minutes for a drink or the bathroom. I was VERY impressed...
Overall, last night made me look forward spending many a nights at the Roxy.
I never in a million years thought I would say that but with Sasha, PVD, Cox,
AvB, Ferry, etc coming there in the next few months and the sound on that Phazon...dear
lord, its going to be a great fall/winter.
PVD will blow that place up in two weeks if its still in tact after Sasha gets
a hold of it...
