I meet up with the gang and decide to check out the City16 party at Nocturnal. Turns out that since the club's grand opening had been delayed, the party has been moved to Space. Considering that every conference, I wind up spending way more time and money at Space than I promise myself I would, I hear a faint whimpering coming from my pocket. That's my wallet desperately trying to crawl up my ass to hide. It's Monday, the first day of the conference and I'm already at Space. Not good. Fortunately, it turns out that my mate Ben (Lost) is working the door. No shit! Day 1 at Space…free.
Inside, the place is half empty, or half full for you new age, serotonin-full optimists. Regardless, the music is on point. Techy goodness from both the main and the side room. Since I'd never seen them live, I'm really looking forward to catching Tiefschwarz and Kosmas Epsilon. Tiefschwarz doesn't disappoint. I think I must have missed Kosmas. The other DJs are mostly on point as well, with the exception of Holden. James still is a little shaky here with his new techy sound. No real progression and many of the tracks seem out of place. Clive Henry also tries on the tech-house hat. While his set is unremarkable at best, at least it's not as bad as last year's opening set for Lawler at State. That was some of the worst shit I'd ever heard. Desyn Masiello and Luke Fair spin solid sets, dropping a few bombs and crowd favorites. The real standout is Damian Lazarus, a name that will resonate throughout the rest of the conference. I look at my watch and realize that it's time for me to go, considering that it's Tuesday morning already and my party starts within a few hours.
