Well it had been one year since Danny Howells had spun a marathon set in NYC (only other NYC set was in July at Cielo on a Sunday nite). He was long overdue. I can honestly say I was so excited for this event, it was so hard to sleep last week. And now it’s come and gone! Ann, Mike and I arrived at Spirit at 11:00 on the dot. There was no wait at all – we got in without any problems, and Ann and I were able to sell our tickets at the door since we were on Danny’s list. The club was empty when we arrived – Danny was already on and warming up – he was feeling out the equipment and sound. Ann and I immediately just walked right into the booth to greet him – we had a photo for him of the 3 of us from the 80’s party at WMC which he enjoyed." />

Danny Howells @ Spirit, NYC
by Sara2214: 04-29-2005

Ann and I immediately just walked right into the booth to greet him – we had a photo for him of the 3 of us from the 80’s party at WMC which he enjoyed.

I was really glad we were there at the very beginning. At past marathon sets, I thought Danny spent a bit too long building….very slow….very loungey….very mellow tracks. This time, I didn’t mind. I really enjoyed the proggy, loungey, classy house music he was playing for the first two hours. It was really enjoyable and fit the crowd/club. It was funky. Danny built up to a great sound and kept that for most of the night. It was fairly consistent the entire night – it just was never really over the top. Definitely not as much banging stuff as last weekend – which I expected. He spun for NY. The crowd was loving him. I think almost every person in that crowd was there for Danny. There was such a vibe – it was fantastic. I was also pleased because it NEVER got packed all night – it was full for a while, but never uncomfortable. I was actually surprised. And there were no door issues all night – no wait. No BS. It was great.

As for the club itself, I LOVED Spirit. I was ready to be disappointed because I had heard such negative feedback about it. Personally, I thought the club was awesome. I love the way it’s set up – it’s a beautiful club. The room is awesome – very large. The 2nd floor (which I guess is usually all VIP) was entirely open the whole night, which was VERY nice. Plenty of places to sit, great sound, I couldn’t have been more pleased! I LOVED IT! What a great venue. And I liked the DJ booth elevated – you could still see the DJ and it probably gave him a better sense of the room. I guess sometimes they have events on the stage?

From when we arrived until about 3:30, I have to say, I think I danced non-stop. The crowd was decent too – not as bad as I thought….everyone was cool. Then, I started aimlessly walking around and just mingling the night away. I think it was around that time (not quite sure) I started to feel that the music lost me a bit….it seemed to get a bit techy (which is good), but weird techy…very repetitive, somewhat lagging…and at times, the dance floor would be still. Seemed an hour or so later, it picked up again and I was ready to go all out until 9am. Then, from around 6 or so until 8am when Danny finished, I thought the music was dragging….very funky…yet not too exciting. It was by no means bad, but I just felt it kind of lost something at the end.

We were very surprised when Danny slowed it down and started bringing it to an end around 7:30. I had hoped for more, but I understand he was tired. I think he ended just before 8:00 with a few encores. A solid 9 hours!! There was still a good crowd left when he finished – and everyone was yelling his name. Mike Brinda also announced Danny would next be back at Spirit on September 9th. I posted a pic of the crowd when Danny finished (Nick took it from the DJ booth). Ann and I made our “lesbo” moves for Danny from the floor as he snapped a picture of us. Lol. The place cleared up and we went upstairs to say goodbye to Danny. We had a pleasant convo with him (sigh) and told him we would miss him for the next 5 months. Maybe I can make it overseas to check him out at some point during that time. I hope so! We also wished him luck for his Space set the following night in Miami, which apparently he needed, because he arrived at it a bit late! (9:00am), but apparently banged it out on the terrace until 1pm.

So that was my night at Spirit. Just seeing EVERYONE out made it amazing. It was just so much fun – so many different friends coming together. An absolute blast! And of course, seeing Danny, magnifique! So between good friends, good music, and good Danny, it was heaven. I really love his sound. He just mixes things up so well – he plays such a variety of music. I can never anticipate what he will be like next. His set at Aria last Saturday and his set a Spirit this Friday were like night and day – yet both great in different ways!
